I love to bake things and I’m pretty good at it as well.  I can bake from scratch or from a tube or box.  This is one of the things my mom taught me while I was growing up as well as my grandmother.

My kids are now getting to the age I was when I started to learn how to bake.  Since their ages differ, I will give each one a job that I was learning at that age.

The first thing I baked with my kids was Chocolate Chip Cookies.  It was something that was pretty easy to make and it didn’t cause too much grief if they decide to run off and leave it to me to finish.

To my surprise, they all stayed with it to the end.  I had each one put an ingredient into the bowl and they all took turns stirring them together.  I did the eggs and have them watch me how to crack them.  Then they helped make the right size balls to put on the cookie sheet and then I put them into the oven for the right amount of time.

They helped me put them on a cooling rake and about 20 minutes later they had a warm treat right before they go to bed.  They all had fun and felt proud of their ability to help out.

I was one proud dad and while we did this, I felt we bond more as a family.  I had a chance to do an activity with my kids that I enjoy as well as a teaching moment with them.  It was a fun time as well as a good treat afterwards.

Have you ever baked with your kids help?  What type of experience did you have with it?  Feel free to leave your answer in the comments and I will respond to the questions you have.

The Adventures They Go On (2015 – A to Z Challenge)

The adventures they go on are always a treat to see.  They could be pirates fighting with swords, or ballerinas dancing on a stage, or recreating the scenes of Bolt.  This is what my three younger kids do on a daily basis besides playing the normal game of tag in the house.

Sometimes I reenact with them and sometimes I just watch since their adventures are more interesting then what is on the television or what I’m reading at the time.  It shows how much imagination they have and how much fun they can produce to battle the boredom in the house.

My kids are not allowed to watch a lot of TV during the week since during the school year.  They are not allowed to use any electronics (Game systems, tablets, etc…) during the week either.

So they make up their own fun instead.  Their generation is starting to depend on too much technology and not enough social face to face time with others.  They seem to be the happiest when they are doing their adventures instead of being on a device.

I see teenagers and other smaller kids playing video games, or on their tablets, or on their cell phones and not paying attention to anything around them.  I also watched two kids texting each other and they were less than five feet from each other.  I’m not condemning the use of any electronic devices by kids but to have limits on them.

By doing this with my oldest son, he is 2 grades higher in Math and Science then what grade he is in.   He also loves to read and play his musical instruments.  He also loves playing on his tablet and play video games as well.  But his love of reading and his grades in Math and Science would not be there if we allow unlimited access to the tablet and video game consoles we have.

How do you limit or do you even limit the amount of electronic devices your kids play with?  What are your thoughts about this?  Feel free to leave your answer in the comments and I will respond to the questions you have.

A To Z Challenge

A To Z Challenge

It’s April and it’s that time of the year again for the A to Z Challenge.

Again I’m going to blog in the A to Z challenge for the month of April.  It is exactly what it sounds like.  Starting with the letter A (April 1st) and ending with the letter Z (April 30th).

I’m hoping this will improve my writing skills as well as hoping for new viewers and new people to interact with about being a parent.  I’m going with the theme of my blog again this year and I will also have a link on top of my blog that will allow you to only see the A to Z challenge posts.

If you like to know more about this challenge then click here.  I’ll have my first post out April 1st which is in seven days.

Thank You for reading and following my blog. Please follow this blog on Facebook (www.facebook.com/lifeofabusydad) and Twitter (@LifeofaBusyDad) if you want to stay up to date with this blog.  I’m also starting up a podcast in April as well called Father of 4 Podcast.  Feel free to check it out here.

dreams

dreams (Photo credit: idlphoto)

First of all, I apologized for not posting this yesterday. I was busy with home and school activities. It’s a life of a busy dad.

When we were young kids our dreams were to get to the magical age of 21. (18 if you are older than me) That is the age when we became an adult as well as having a cool job at the time and making tons of money. Maybe your dream might be a little different from mine but it is just the same.

Now after being an adult for a while and getting a little bit older we want to stop time. Some of us wish we could go back to those non-stressful days when we were younger to only to live without worry or fear of any type. Ok, maybe not the fear we are feeling as an adult. I haven’t seen a child not be afraid of the dark or something under their bed.

Now I see this in my oldest son as he told me that he can’t wait to grow up and learn to drive. My oldest daughter is also talking about how she is going to drive as well as make money from a place of work.

Children can teach us all kinds of things in life. It not all bad and it doesn’t have to be your child who teaches you. Children start off with the purest hearts.

Now it’s your turn. What dream did you have when you were a child? What dreams have your children shared with you that they want to be? Please leave your comments and stories below.

Y
